Standard Operating Procedures

Standard Operating Procedure, or SOP, defines the rights, responsibilities and restrictions placed upon the working crew and each department.

For clarity, here's a list of definitions for recurring terms in these documents:

  • Sophont: Any individual entity acting through a brain, positronic or organic, that is capable of self-expression and introspection via structured language or gestures. Cyborgs and Station AIs are exceptions.
  • Crew: Any sophont that has entered into employment contract with Nanotrasen or Quantum Blue, as proven by ID Card or authentic signed document.
  • Command: The heads of staff and Central Command representatives in the standard positions of: Captain, Chief Engineer, Chief Medical Officer, Head of Personnel, Head of Security, Quartermaster and Research Director.
  • Detainee: A suspect that has been cuffed or is being escorted to security, but has not been yet sentenced.
  • Prisoner: Any sophont that has been legally sentenced and is serving time.
  • Death: The cessation of neural function of a sophont.

Article of Rights

Any sophont is entitled to the following rights:

  1. Right to sustenance: Any sophont may not be deprived of essential sustenance, including food, water, or other needs for basic survival.
  2. Right to medical aid: Any sophont may not be deprived of medical aid necessary to survive, provided it is available.
  3. Freedom of movement: If there is not a risk of harm to self or others, or of escape from legal detention, a sophont should not be restrained.
  4. Right to legal counsel: Any sophont may not be denied the right to legal counsel, provided one is available, even in custody.

Hiring Procedure

The Head of Personnel is normally in charge of hiring new staff and transferring current staff from one department to another, if necessary. Should the Head of Personnel be busy or unavailable, each department head is expected to respond to requests for a new position within their department, and cooperate with other heads regarding transfers.

Each department head is also responsible for promoting acting personnel to critical positions where officially appointed assignees aren't present, and demoted once one does arrive.

Department heads also reserve the right to demote or fire anyone in their staff where not doing so would hinder the department's ability to function, or in cases where the individual fails to act out their duties.
